Sister of Mine by Laurie Petrou - Blog Tour Review

The Grayson sisters are trouble. Everyone in their small town knows it. But no-one can know of the secret that binds them together. Hattie is the light. Penny is the darkness. Together they have a balance.

But one night the balance is toppled. A match is struck. A fire is started. A cruel husband is killed. The potential for a new life flickers in the fire's embers but resentment, guilt, and jealousy suffocate like smoke.

Their lives have been engulfed in flames - will they ever be able to put them out?

Steeped in intrigue and suspense, Sister of Mine is a powerhouse debut; a sharp, disquieting thriller written in stunning, elegant prose with a devastating twist.

My Review

I always really enjoy reading books that feature dysfunctional relationships, and Sister of Mine definitely has that. Hattie and Penny are both brilliant characters in their own ways. They depend on each other but they also seem to resent each other at times.
An incident occurs which changes their lives and shapes the way their relationship develops.
The way I was feeling about this story switched about half way through. I changed my mind so many times whilst reading about which sister I preferred. Ultimately I liked them both equally, even though they both have flaws, I could see both of the sides and found it hard to pick. Laurie Petrou has written characters that make you empathise with both. I can't say too much without spoilers, which can make reviewing this type of book difficult.
Ultimately I felt like how much is too much to destroy a relationship between sisters. I have three sisters myself and I always feel like I would do anything for each of them but how much is too much and when does it cross a line into complete madness?
I love a book that makes you think what would I do in that situation?
Penny, as the older sister, feels like she has to look out for Hattie. Since Penny's husband died, and she moves back into her childhood home, the sisters rely on each other even more. But the secrets they are keeping, threaten to ruin their relationship and any chance of a happy life.
Laurie Petrou is an excellent writer who has wrote a unique story that I was completely gripped with. The pace and plot was perfect with just the right amount of mystery to keep me turning the pages to see what happened next. I would highly recommend this book if you like domestic noir type reads. Sister of Mine is the first book I have read by Laurie Petrou, and since I really enjoyed her style of writing I am sure it won't be my last.
