My Lovely Wife by Samantha Downing

'The most gripping psychological thriller of 2019' Stylist
This is a story about a married couple. They met, fell in love, had two beautiful children. So far, so ordinary.
But they have a very dark secret.
It's a story with a twist. And then another. And another.
You might think you've read stories like this before.
You'd be wrong.
By the end of the first chapter you'll be hooked.
At page fifty you might not sleep until you finish.
And when you turn the last page, you'll ask yourself one question:
How well do you really know the person you love most?
My Review

What a superb read this was! I was gripped from page one and just couldn't stop reading. I haven't read any of Samantha Downing's work before so I was pleasantly surprised to read a gritty, twisted and completely fabulous book. I might find it difficult to review as it is the type of book that is difficult to describe without spoilers.
Millicent and her husband seem to lead a normal, happy family life with their children. They have family dinners, do homework have a limit on how much sugar and junk food they are allowed and their mother always checks they have done their homework. She is an estate agent, he is a tennis coach. However, everything is not what it seems. Millicent and her husband have a secret and troubling part to their life.
The story is told from the husbands point of view, giving an insight into how their marriage works. He and his wife have a odd relationship. Their 'date nights' are definitely unique. He is very eager to please his wife.
I liked the way this story was told, the husband narrating things that had happened previously and current events. He loves his wife and children very much. So when his children start to have difficulties he has to re assess the life he and his wife live.
I wasn't overly keen on Millicent, she was quite domineering and everything had to be done her way. There is some explanation given about why she is this way. Although this is definitely a book that will have you second guessing everything.
My Lovely Wife is excellent read and I highly recommend it, it is without doubt one of my favourite reads this year.

  1. Sounds so spooky to me. Not sure if I should read it or not! Good review, all the same.
